Sound of Silence

Gillian Ayres is one of Britain's best-known painters. In 1960 she was the only woman to take part in the "situation" exhibition in London which launched a major new phase of modern painting in Britain.

Gillian Ayres - Sound of Silence

Although abstract in appearance, her work reveals the inspiration of nature. In "Sound of Silence" the larger part suggests a cottage garden in bright sunshine. Pointed roof gables can be seen at the top and plants forms below. Ayres seems to have combined this with a romantic night scene of a crescent moon and stars on the right, evoking the silence of the conntryside and of the night which have their own symphony of sounds.
